Anthony Michelli - Salem House Studio – Production Biography
Over the past three decades Anthony Michelli has been actively involved in sound production for several musical projects spanning a wide range of idioms and applications. These include international releases of sound productions in jazz, instrumental, world, creative, and commercial music categories all of which have been successfully released on cd, vinyl, online, loop libraries, soundtracks and film scores. Through the years Anthony has been an active Beta Tester for Presonus Audio Electronics Inc., based in Europe and Baton Rouge, LA. and has delivered several public master classes in Drum Micing, Production and Technique concepts in association with Earthworks Audio based in New Hampshire, NY.
With over three decades of experience as a musician, as well as a background in his formative years in studios based in Hamilton, ON, Anthony developed the skills, techniques, and creative intuition needed fora unique approach to production. While studying at the University of Toronto, Anthony refined his knowledge in the “Sound Recording and Studio Course” under the direction of Dean Paul Pederson.
Michelli’s teaching pedagogy and curriculums have been developed alongside his professional skills as a producer, mixer, editor, engineer, performer and studio musician. His courses for post-secondary institutions include Sound and Music Technology, Introduction to Music Technology, Music Production II, Musical Creativity. These courses were all developed for post-seconday degree programs at StFX University, Mohawk College and Centennial College and offered in a balanced format integrating and strengthening the theoretical and performance focused curriculum concurrently running in each academic year. Production concepts were delivered inline with the curriculum present in other core courses, intentionally designed to strengthen the practical application of the technical and theoretical concepts, balanced with a creative expectation of how to integrate them into individual works. Some of the concepts include analogue and digital formats; simple to complex recording skills; best practices in audio capture; microphone types and details; audio acoustics; editing practices; reproduction of music; production of projects; mixing practices; definition of the various audio effects and their practical uses; theoretical production principles around sound, space and stereo spectrum imaging; digital audio workstations; sound card integration; MIDI; outboard equipment; various plugins; mastering concepts; efficient file management; bouncing stems and complete sessions; importing and exporting; uploading, downloading and managing digital files; the history and concepts around pre-established of recording; tracking one source - voice, to several sources – orchestra, big band; genre and stylistic nuance in sound and production; music set to picture; time code sync; etc.
Anthony continues to free-lance from his studio - Salem House Studio, tracking with the option to outsource to larger studio environments depending on the demands of each individual project.
His skills as a producer and organizer were further honed through decades of experience teaching and producing young aspiring professional ensembles at York University, Mohawk College and Centennial College music programs and at the Inter-Provincial and National Music summer community camps.
Anthony’s creativity and knowledge of music, production and technology, give him a unique character and edge to be able to realize what various artists look for and require in their projects through workflow, production, sound recording, editing, mixing and mastering.
